Cause of Transmission issues on a 2024 Santa Fe (4/23 – 7/02 Builds)
What is wrong with 2024 Hyundai Santa Fe transmissions?
Why are 24 Hyundai Santa Fe transmission shudder? Why are they failing? To summarize: Bad transmission software programming from the factory. All cars produced between 4/23 – 7/02/2024 with MX5A transmission, need to be recalled. See below for more details
Hyundai has just announced Recall/stop sale for 24 Santa Fe’s GAS
Parking Pawl (see photo): Small finger sized arm that locks into the gear when “Park” is selected. (Not the parking brake)
The TCM will send out some type of signal voltage to activate the parking pawl, and the voltage will move the pawl to lock into place into the gear teeth. (There should be a safety switch that ensures the vehicle brake is pressed before it will go into Park). When the vehicle is stopped, this is no problem. Hyundai has identified a software problem where the parking pawl is being commanded by the TCM to engage while the vehicle is in motion.
If the vehicle is going slow or in reverse, it will come to a sudden jolting stop when the parking pawl engages with the gear. If the vehicle is moving faster, then the problem will escalate. Most likely, the parking pawl will be pulled off the mount or broken and become a loose piece of metal inside the transmission.
Depending where the piece of loose metal rests, the other problems will start. Tolerances inside a transmission are very precise, and any foreign object will either wedge in somewhere and stop the gears from meshing or escape by damaging the transmission housing. Hopefully they can update the TCM so it stops doing this. They are saying build dates from 4/23 to 7/2 are affected, but I have seen some with earlier build dates have a problem. There may be another problem with the earlier models but that is just speculation on my part.
